A recent study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in December 2023, has shed light on kiwi's potential to improve mood and overall well-being. This study, conducted in New Zealand, looked at 167 participants with low vitamin C levels and divided them into three groups: one who consumed a placebo chewable vitamin C tablet, another who took a legitimate vitamin C chewable tablet, and a third who incorporated two kiwis per day into his diet.

The results revealed a notable finding: those who consumed two kiwis daily experienced significant increases in their overall well-being and mood compared to the other two groups. However, both placebo and vitamin C tablets showed no significant difference from each other in terms of effects on mood.

Associate teaching professor at Syracuse University Jane Burrell, who was not involved in the study, noted that while kiwi has been labeled a “superfood,” it is important to maintain a balanced perspective on food. Burrell emphasized that seasonal and locally accessible foods can also provide vital nutrients, without needing to resort to imported products.

One of the challenges posed by the study, according to sports nutrition professor at Western University, Peter Lemon, is the difficulty in conducting a perfect double-blind study when using kiwi, since participants can expect to feel positive health effects. when consuming this fruit, which can influence your perceptions.

Additionally, Lemon noted that kiwi contains a variety of nutrients in addition to vitamin C, making it difficult to directly compare it to vitamin C supplements. The presence of antioxidants and fiber in kiwi could contribute to its beneficial effects on the body. mood and well-being.

Despite the study's limitations, both Burrell and Lemon agree that getting nutrients from whole foods is preferable through supplements whenever possible. Lemon highlighted the importance of incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into the daily diet, suggesting that at least two-thirds of the plate at each meal should consist of these nutrient-dense foods.

Other previous studies have supported the findings on the positive impact of vitamin C on mood and well-being. A 2021 Korean study found a relationship between low levels of vitamin C and reduced mental vitality while increasing vitamin C intake improved motivation and cognitive performance.

Ultimately, this Kiwi study highlights the importance of a balanced and varied diet to promote physical and mental well-being. Although kiwi may offer unique benefits, it is essential to remember that no fruit or vegetable is a nutritional “superhero” on its own, but rather it is the combination of a variety of foods that supports optimal health.
