This study, which analyzed data from the Galician Atlantic Diet study, demonstrated that the Atlantic diet significantly reduced rates of metabolic syndrome in study participants. Metabolic syndrome, a combination of conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and abdominal obesity, is a major risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.

What is the Atlantic diet about?

This is a nutritional plan rooted in the culinary customs of northwest Spain and Portugal. Although it shares similarities with the Mediterranean Diet, it is differentiated by its emphasis on foods such as cod, red meat, and pork products, in addition to including potatoes, which are not as common in the Mediterranean diet.

Dr. Keri Gans, author of “The Small Change Diet,” highlights that the Atlantic Diet also promotes values ​​such as sharing family meals and maintaining an active lifestyle, aspects that contribute to both physical and mental health.

But how does the Atlantic Diet compare to its Mediterranean counterpart? According to nutritionist Jessica Cording, both diets share a solid base in plant-based foods, fish, and healthy fats, but the Atlantic allows slightly higher consumption of red meat and dairy. However, she stresses that both encourage a healthy lifestyle more than just a list of foods.

Experts agree that the Atlantic Diet offers numerous health benefits, thanks to its emphasis on fresh, local, and minimally processed foods. However, they warn about the need to moderate the consumption of red meat and alcohol and point out that it may not be suitable for those who need a more defined structure in their diet.

The Atlantic Diet emerges as a viable and healthy option for those seeking to improve their diet and lifestyle. With its focus on fresh foods and traditional culinary customs, it promises not only physical health benefits but also a deeper connection to the local culture and community.
